The formation of the Coastal surveillance and information service is linked to the beginning of the Homeland War, when other HRM units were formed. One of the first operational stations was on the island of Žirje, which played a significant role in the defense of the Šibenik waters. Their radar was borrowed from a private fishing boat from Murter. In the first months of the war, the coastal surveillance service was not organized as a single unit, but the formation of stations was approached spontaneously and according to the needs of each battlefield. In December 1991, the 274th OSMiO HRM Company was formed, uniting all stations and starting to operate as a single unit. With the transition to the peacetime structure, in March 1996, the 274th Coast Guard Battalion was formed with the command in Split.
Since 2008, with a new reorganization and merger with the 805th Battalion, the OSMiO Coastal surveillance and information service) Battalion of today's composition has been operating. This gives the unit the ability to provide communication and information support to the Croatian Navy. Today, the OSMiO battalion fulfills all tasks that are adjusted to the needs of the NATO alliance.
